10 New Years Beauty Resolutions (you’ll thank yourself for)

We know that everyone could do with a little advice now and again, so our co-founder Karen has cemented 10 resolutions that you’ll thank yourself for in the coming months!

3- Eat more fruit & veg! Eating the correct balance of the following vitamins and minerals to supply hair & skin with all that it needs to remain shiny, strong or clear & youthful.   Protein – As hair is made of protein, ensuring you have enough protein in your diet is crucial for making hair strong and healthy. If you are not consuming enough protein in your diet, your hair & skin are likely to become dry & aged. Extremely low protein diets may result in hair loss. Choose chicken, turkey, fish, dairy products and eggs as excellent sources of protein along with vegetarian sources such as legumes and nuts.  Iron – Iron is an especially important mineral for hair and too little iron (anaemia) is a major cause of hair loss. The hair follicle and root are fed by a nutrient rich blood supply. When iron levels (serum ferritin) fall below a certain point, you may experience anaemia. This disrupts the nutrient supply to the follicle, affecting the hair growth cycle and may result in shedding. Animal products such as red meat, chicken and fish provide iron with a high bioavailability, meaning the iron is readily available to the body. Vegetarians can raise their iron stores by including lentils, spinach and other leafy green vegetables such as broccoli, kale and salad greens.   [We’ve an extended post on this, so keep tuned here]

4- Invest in the condition of your hair this year. A small change that will make a big difference is to add Olaplex into your colour service, this bond multipler looks after the integrity of your hair colour & condition. We recommend weekly treatments at this time of year to keep dryness at bay, ask your stylists at Atelier for a recommendation.

5- Make 2017 the year you start wearing a SPF. The suns rays are damaging for our skin all year round and our skincare experts here at Atelier advise always putting a sunscreen under your makeup to protect and keep that youthful look.

6- Don’t bite your nails, keep your nails looking fab with the help of geleration polish. A low maintenance long lasting gel manicure that will put a protective layer over your own nails whilst experimenting with some great colour choices.

7- Exfoliate your skin weekly. As we age, cell turnover slows down and dead skin cells can give us a dull complexion. Exfoliating both the face and body weekly helps get rid of the dead top layers of skin. This allows moisturisers and serums to better penetrate the skin and helps your foundation glide on smoothly instead of sitting atop flaky skin giving us a luminous glow for 2017.

8- Don’t over wash your hair. If you need to shampoo your hair more than twice a week try using a sulphate free shampoo/conditioner or try just rinsing and conditioning . The problem is Washing hair every day removes our natural oils and proteins, causing our hair to dry out quickly, adding to problems like colour fade, condition, lack of shine and frizzier texture. Our stylists recommend using a dry shampoo in between washes to give your hair a boost of freshness whilst drying out oily roots.

9- Clean out your makeup bag & brushes. Makeup is a beautiful thing but what lies beneath the surface isn’t so cute… Makeup and makeup brushes can become germ infested if we don’t look after them. Not keeping these products clean or sharing them among friends can lead to a simple breakout or a serious infection. Just like food, makeup also has expiration dates. Applying old makeup to your face can cause breakouts, irritation and infections. Make this New Years resolution something you do regularly in 2017

10- Trim your locks. Here at Atelier we recommend trimming your hair every 6-8 weeks to maintain your style & keep your tresses in tip top condition. Although it seems counterintuitive, trimming your hair whilst your trying to grow it will actually encourage hair growth by getting rid of any damaged, broken, or split ends. Whilst your stylist should take off the bare minimum approx 2mm, far less than it will have grown we still recommend having it done as regularly, as this is the quickest route to getting the long locks you’d love ❤ in 2017.
